What the City of Hutto Says
The City of Hutto Building Department FAQs list common permit types. Building a patio cover is one of them. Decks are not named on that page, and it gives no deck size or height that triggers a permit.
| Project | What the city FAQ says |
|---|---|
| Patio cover | Listed as a common permit type |
| Patio or patio cover review time | About 10 to 15 business days |
| Deck | Not named in the city FAQ. Check with the city |
| Adding lights | Electrical or inspection only permit |
| Storage building over 200 sq ft | Permit needed |
| Anything in the Historic Old Town District | Storage buildings and fences need a permit there |
| Permit fees | Most are based on project value |
Austin's deck rules do not apply in Hutto. Hutto sets its own. When the city FAQ is silent, call the Hutto Building Department and ask.
What to Ask the Building Department
- Does my deck need a permit at this size and height?
- Does it change things if the deck attaches to the house?
- Does a roof over the deck make it a patio cover permit?
- What drawings do you want with the application?
- Which inspections will you do, and when?
We ask these for you on every job and share the answer before we start.
Outside the City Limits
Some Hutto addresses sit outside the city. The Williamson County Infrastructure FAQs say the county has no zoning rules. The county has not adopted residential building standards. If your home is in a city or its ETJ, the county says to check with that city.
HOA Approval
If your home is in an HOA, its rules are separate from the city's. Ask the HOA for its architectural rules and any approval form before you build. Most forms ask for a drawing, the size, the materials and the colors. We can give you a drawing for the form.
Call Before You Dig
Under Texas Utilities Code Chapter 251, you notify the call center no earlier than 14 days and no later than 48 hours before you dig. Weekends and legal holidays do not count toward the 48 hours. The law covers digging 16 inches or deeper with power equipment. Deck and pergola post holes often go that deep. Dial 811.

Edwards Aquifer Zones
TCEQ Edwards Aquifer rules for private residences apply to building at homes in the recharge or contributing zones in Williamson County. If your lot sits in one of those zones, check with TCEQ before you build.
